Our Story
In 1985, Phill and Patti Urena started a Bible study and, just over a year later, had a thriving home church. During this time, they saw many miracles and the group grew from the original five to over twenty members. This small house church led over 30 people to the Lord in just a few months, simply by pursuing Jesus wholeheartedly. No religion, just a simple passion for Christ.
In September of 1986 Phill and Patti connected with the Association of Vineyard Churches USA, a movement led by an Apostolic leader named John Wimber. Over the next 31 years, Phill was trained and served in The Vineyard in various roles, as a youth pastor, a worship leader, and an assistant pastor for 12 years while helping plant two churches. For seven of those 12 years, Patti was the Children Ministry Overseer. In 2004, they started the training process to be senior leaders, planting The Mosaic Church, now known as The Convergence Community. Their passion and commitment for church planting is still part of our DNA.
In 2008, Mike and Theresa Ludwigsen joined us. Over the last 17 years, they have served as children’s ministry directors, youth pastors, and for the last ten years, as an integral part of our Pastoral Team. In July of 2023, they took over the role of Congregation Pastors, while still part of our apostolic leadership team.
In February 2012, the church Phill and Patti helped plant in 2001 merged with The Mosaic, and with that merger, Ginnie Grupinski, who was a big part of the 2001 church plant, Vaughn and Joann Weimer, and Sal and Maria Cinquemani joined our pastoral team. In 2015, Phill’s itinerant ministry partner, Dan DiScioscia, joined as a prophetic voice. Finally in 2019, Deborah Curcio joined our leadership rounding out our present Pastoral Team.
In December 2014, the Lord spoke to Phill, “Ask Me what I want my Church to look like.” When the word was shared, the entire congregation intentionally pressed in seeking the Lord through prayer. After eight months, the congregation discerned confidently that the Lord was asking us to leave the comfort of our space and follow Him on a pilgrimage. What we thought would be a few months, turned into a five year journey without a home base. We gave ourselves to study and discovery, transformation and maturity. We studied the early Church, different models of Christian community, and connected with leaders from varying models of community in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. From the beginning, we were led to focus on Acts 2:42, striving to make it the foundation of our congregation. As we learned and we pressed into His love, a foundation that fosters healthy community and family evolved, and with it an atmosphere that empowers people to find their God-given place as His sons and daughters in mission. Most importantly, the leaders committed to servanthood. A model rooted in love and honor that empowers maturity and brings forth healthy spiritual fathers and mothers. We discovered when this is done well people are transformed and healthy lovers of God and lovers of people are born. The first five years of the pilgrimage led us to study, and to the development of our core values. The last five years applied what was good in theory and it began to become a corporate reality.
The byproduct of our obedience to follow Him is the birth of Kingdom Convergence, a ministry to serve the regional Body of Christ, and the rebirth of The Mosaic as the Convergence Community.
We now have this congregation here on Long Island and another in Landenberg, Pa.
